The Communication Forensics and Cybercrime Division (CFCD) was officially established on January 31, 2016, following the strategic merger of three specialised units within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) – the Communication Intelligence Unit (CIU), the Digital Forensic Unit (DFU), and the Cybercrime Unit.
This consolidation brought together essential capabilities under a single formation, strengthening the JCF’s ability to effectively address the threats posed by cybercrime and to manage the increasing importance of digital evidence in modern policing.
As a specialised division, the CFCD is dedicated to delivering expert digital forensic and cybercrime investigative support. The division plays a critical role in enhancing law enforcement operations by ensuring the accurate and secure handling, analysis, and presentation of digital evidence.
The CFCD is structured into four key departments:
- Digital Forensic Laboratory
Responsible for the extraction, preservation, and forensic analysis of data retrieved from digital devices such as computers, mobile phones, and storage media. - Communication Forensic Laboratory
Focuses on analysing communication records and related data that are critical to criminal investigations. - Emerging Technologies
Monitors advancements in technology, assesses potential risks, and develops strategies to address new challenges affecting law enforcement and public safety. - Administration and Quality Control
Oversees the division’s operational functions, ensures adherence to professional standards, and supports continuous improvement through staff training and quality assurance protocols.
