The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Canine Division showcases the dynamic partnership between law enforcement and animals.
Dubbed ‘man’s best friend’, the JCF’s highly trained police dogs have truly carved a special place within the Constabulary’s operations. They have plugged the gaps of human limitations, providing incomparable service in areas of detection, apprehension and protection.
The Canine Division was established in 1954 as a small section within the Kingston Eastern Division. It was formed with the help of pioneers trained at the prestigious Metropolitan Dog Training School in Kent, England.
In 1971, it was reorganised with expert guidance from England and placed under the command of the Patrol Division. A few years later, in 1974, the canine team was sent to San Antonio, Texas, to undergo specialised training in narcotics detection, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most trusted units in Jamaica’s fight against drug trafficking.
Continuous training is in fact a requirement for those operating within the Division. Handlers must be at peak performance, maintaining physical fortitude, and in-depth knowledge of the dogs in their care, while the dogs’ every needs are met and maintained.
By 1979, the growing success and importance of the unit led to its official upgrade to a full division, now based at Harman Barracks in Kingston.
