The Technical Enforcement Unit, originally established in 1995 as the Breathalyser Unit, plays a pivotal role in modern traffic law enforcement in Jamaica. Although the initial programme faced challenges due to device incompatibility with the island’s tropical climate, it was successfully reintroduced in 2008, marking the beginning of a technologically advanced approach to road safety.
The Technical Enforcement Unit’s mission is to improve road safety and reduce collisions and fatalities through the strategic use of technology, data, and training. By equipping police personnel with the right tools and knowledge, the unit supports effective and consistent traffic enforcement across the island.
The unit is responsible for the training, management, and maintenance of several key enforcement devices used islandwide, including:
- Intoxilyzers 800, 8000, and 9000 – for accurate breath alcohol testing
- Body-worn cameras – to promote transparency and accountability
- Speed radars – to detect and deter speeding violations
- Tint meters and decibel meters – to enforce regulations on vehicle modifications
The Technical Enforcement Unit ensures that these tools are strategically deployed throughout the island, remain in optimal working condition, and are used effectively by trained personnel.
