Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Unit

The Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Unit (AIRU) was established on March 21, 2022, and operates through four sub-units located at the Area 1, Area 2, and Area 3 Headquarters, as well as the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB) Headquarters.

This arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force is tasked with the prompt response and comprehensive investigation of all fatal collisions, potential fatal incidents, service vehicle collisions, and government vehicle crashes. Investigations are carried out using scientific methodologies, ensuring accuracy, credibility, and objectivity in determining causes, contributing factors, and accountability.

Members of the AIRU are trained in advanced scientific techniques to reconstruct collision scenes, allowing for the development of detailed, evidence-based reports. These reports are instrumental in both criminal and civil proceedings, and are frequently used by the courts to support informed legal decisions. Additionally, the unit’s findings are relied upon by insurance companies, legal professionals, and various government agencies to guide their own assessments and policy decisions.

Since its establishment, the AIRU has had a significant impact on the quality and effectiveness of traffic collision investigations in Jamaica. It has demonstrated consistent success in delivering timely and thorough responses to serious collision scenes, ensuring precise scene processing and evidence collection.

The resulting reports have strengthened legal outcomes and contributed to greater accountability on the roads. The AIRU has enhanced public confidence in the handling of road traffic incidents through its professional standards and use of scientific approaches.
