The Department of Driver Training

The Department of Driver Training (DDT) is one of two departments within the Faculty of Operations Management and Skills Training (FOMST) at the National Police College of Jamaica (NPCJ). It was established approximately 50 years ago to provide structured training in motor vehicle operations for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the Rural Police Force, and other government and private agencies. 

The department focuses on equipping personnel with essential driving skills, vehicle maintenance knowledge, and safe operational practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in their roles.

Accredited Programmes & Certifications offered include:

  1. Motorcycle Operations Level 1
  2. Commercial Driving Operations (Level II)
  3. Commercial Driving Instructions (Level III)
  4. Commercial Truck Operator Training (Beginner to Advanced: 5,000KG – 15,000KG)
  5. Dispatch and Delivery Driver Certifications
  6. Retail and Removal Truck Driver Training

On January 27, 2023, the National Council on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NCTVET) accredited DDT, recognising it as the only Accredited Training Organization (ATO) certified to offer these specialised driving programmes. Since accreditation, DDT has successfully:

  1. Trained and certified 305 JCF members in Commercial Driving Operations (NVQ-J Level 2)
  2. Certified 22 members in Commercial Driving Instructions for Articulated Heavy-Combination Vehicles (NVQ-J Level 3)
